As a whole this transfer window has been a missed opportunity for many fans, we were at the peak of our success in recent years, one of the biggest clubs in Europe and European champions; it has never been as desirable as it is to come to Liverpool football club. Now following this you would expect a fairly big summer or at the very least one notable signing of the summer, however this is not the case for summer 2019/20, as our only signings have been two youngsters and a backup keeper on a free.
I don't think anyone was expecting a big transfer window from Liverpool, especially after our last two summers, spending big on players like Alisson Becker & Naby Keita, but we expected an reinforcement or two, players to improve the squad depth to try and keep up with the pace of Man City. Man City won the domestic treble last season but added two arguably starters for the treble winning City squad, spending over hundred million pounds on another two players to improve that immense team. This team is one of the best teams we've ever seen in the premier league and we are meant to compete with them when they had two ready made reinforcements - to our backup keeper and two youngsters for the future, so no squad players or starters to rival the oil-money fuelled Manchester side. For me we can't hope to compete with this team over the course of a 38-game season, injuries and fatigue over the season comes into play big time, and the depth of Man City's team have is unrivalled by any club in the English league. I hope I'm proved wrong but this transfer window was a big mistake.
Although, I am happy with the business we have done, two youngsters who look like they will become regulars for the first team very soon, both training with the senior set up already on a regular basis, ones to watch. Adrian as a backup keeper is an improvement on Mignolet and he's already showed his credentials in his heroics in the Super-cup penalty shootout, winning us the trophy with his penalty save against Tammy Abraham. As individual signings, I am happy with each one, but as a whole I don't believe it was good enough for us to push for the Holy Grail, which is the Premier League, the trophy that has eluded us for as long as I've been in this world. Champions League was amazing for us, seeing this amazing club win it for the second time in my lifetime was a moment i will never forget, but winning the Premier League would be astronomical and rocket us above any club out there. This window was an missed opportunity for me and when looking back at it for this season, we will see the damage that could of been avoided in regards to our title ambitions.
That being said we do have players coming back from long term injuries or reoccurring injuries, who could be game changers for us this season. One in particular for me would be Naby Keita, showed glimpses of his raw skill and technique last season, but never really got going with his injuries and adaptation to the more physical Premier League. This season could be his breakout one for Liverpool, should be well adapted to the physical side of this league and ready to show what hes all about, currently on the sidelines with a little knock before the Super Cup, but i feel he could be a real assets for our title hopes this season. Another big one is Oxlade-Chamberlian, the explosive midfielder got a season ending injury in the 2017/18 season in the semi-final of the champions leagues against Roma, causing him to miss the rest of the season and the entirety of 2018/19 season. However, now he is ready to put all that behind him and get back to his best, having a full preseason and back up to his fitness, many fans have high hopes for "The Ox". Lastly we have the youngster Rhian Brewster, 19 years of age, was herald for big things before his season ending injury in January 2018, he had a hard time of it off the pitch being out for more than a year, but now he's back and with reassurances given by the manager that he has every opportunity to jump start his Liverpool career this season and I believe he can provide this side with goals from the bench and really surprise some people with his talent. From this we can see that players who were predominantly missing last season are now available for us going into this new season and I hope they can give us that something extra to push us over the line in winning big titles this season.
Now we will see if this window was an success or mistake going into the 2019/20 season, but what we can all do is get behind every single player wearing that beloved red shirt and look forward to everything this new season brings.
