Going into this transfer window, many Liverpool fans were excited to see how the club pushed on from their impressive season of 2018/19, myself included. In this season they finished 2nd on 97 points and were declared champions of Europe, by winning the champions league.
Its only natural to expect an active transfer window after a monumental season for the Merseyside club, leaving the club as one of the most desirable destinations of the modern football world. However it has been a slow transfer window for the club so far, with the only signing of the summer being the young centre back Sepp van den Berg from PEC Zwolle for a small amount in today's market of an initial fee of 1.9 mil euros . Many fans around the world will see this as an underwhelming signing, when we want to compete with the best clubs in the world. This for me is the exact reason i am very happy about this signing, it was reported that clubs such as Ajax, Bayern Munich and PSV were all interested in this player, so high in demand player.
A little info on this young dutch Centre back; he stands at a tall 1.89m/6ft 2, born in Dec 20 2001, born in Zwolle so signed from his hometown club. He was named Zwolle's youth player of the month in December of 2017 and was then offered a professional contract in February of 2018. He made his debut for the club in march, against the dutch side FC Groningen, which ended in defeat, but went on to play the 5 more games of the remaining season. He also broke the record in September to become the youngest player to play at least ten games in Eredivise, previously held by Clarence Seedorf. His appearances seem to dry up on Jaap Stam arrival as manager, but 22 professional appearances nothing to be ashamed off for a player of his age and talent.
An nice anecdote from our Manager on the Dutch youngster... "My God, you are tall!' while also calling him 'impressive'" ... Sepp was towering over Jurgen when he arrived for the first time at Melwood, with Jurgen Klopp being an already impressive 6ft 4, meaning reports of Sepp previous height must be false. A very key asset for a centre back and bodes well for the youngster.
Having only played 22 appearances for his former club PEC Zwolle, indicates that this signing is one for the future. This is something I am fully behind, as we need to be securing the best young talent from around the world and building for the future. It is said however that Klopp would like to keep the youngster around the first team squad and is travelling with the squad on our preseason tour. This will give the young Centre back a chance to show what hes all about and give a good first impression of himself to the manager and fans alike. I have high hopes for this player and believe he could follow the path of fellow young Centre back, Joe Gomez, who was signed at the age of 18 and has quickly rose threw the ranks and is now and established member of the first team and 2nd/3rd choice centre back.

It has also been widely reported that we are on the verge of signing another very promising youngster from Fulham, recently premier league relegated side. This has been seen as a major coup from Liverpool, as the record breaking winger has been sort after by the likes of Real Madrid, Paris St Germain and RB leipzig. In my opinion this would be another brilliant signing for the club, bolstering the young talent being established the break through to the first team. One thing to note on Harvey Elliott is he is the youngest player to ever start for a premier league side, making his league debut for Fulham at the age of 16 yrs and 30 days, and previously making his debut for official debut for Fulham at the age of 15 years old. Obviously a big talent and one to keep an eye on. This one for me is very important as it doesn't escape my notice that our entire front three are 27 going on 28, which is among their peak years, but means that we need to start thinking about bringing in young players for these positions who can eventually replace the like of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. Harvey Elliott is an example of this for me, a young player who is a big talent and plays in the same role as our front three, Brewster is another example of this.
If we did manage to complete this deal that would mean two youngsters being our only signings of the transfer window so far, which for me would be a good start but not a desired end. I still believe we need a flexible attacking player to play along the front three, one who is young but already fairly established in his own right. Along with this a backup left back for the departed Alberto Moreno, preferably one who could compete with Andy Robertson, to keep the competition in the squad high.
Klopp has already came out and stated that, “The transfer market is open. We will see what we do, but I don’t think it will be the biggest transfer window of all time,”, suggesting that if we do sign anymore players it won't be for big money and there wont be many more additions. I'm hoping for at least one more signing after Harvey Elliott, but what we can all admit from previous windows, is that Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp know what they are doing, so we need to just trust them and see what comes next in this window.
